Hi, I’m Penelope De Ruiter.

Wonky is a creative studio built around the idea that there is rarely only one right way to do things. It is about looking at a problem from a different angle, following the slightly unexpected idea and making room for work that feels a little more original.

I chose the name Wonky because it reflects the way I like to think and design. Wonky does not mean messy or badly made. It means a little left field. A little unconventional. It is the moment where a brand takes a different path instead of following the same formula as everyone else.

Behind Wonky is me, Penelope, an Adelaide-based Creative Designer and marketing creative with a background that spans hospitality, digital marketing, print and signage.

I started out in hospitality, designing menus and in-house collateral while also managing digital marketing channels and helping promote the businesses I worked in. It was a hands-on introduction to design because the work had to be useful, practical and ready to go in the real world.

From there, I moved into a digital marketing agency and gained experience working across brands, campaigns and digital content. That gave me a broader understanding of how design fits into marketing, not just how it looks on the page.

I then moved into an in-house role with a large printing and signage company, where I worked across graphic design and marketing while developing a deeper understanding of print production, prepress, large-format applications and signage.

That mix of experiences has shaped how I work today. I think about the idea, the brand, the audience and the practical execution together. Whether it is a new identity, a campaign, a printed piece or a digital asset, I want the finished work to feel considered, useful and a little unexpected.
